Why did I become a physiotherapist?
As a teenager I was very active and was devastated when I had a significant injury to the ligaments in my left knee which kept me sidelined from all sports for months. After a few weeks of sitting around my parents house and making no improvements, we decided to look at non-surgical options. I was lucky enough to see a Physiotherapist who did extensive hands on physiotherapy and prescribed me the right exercises to do at home. I was able to progress my sets and reps as harder and more functional exercises were added to my routine. Before I knew it, I was back on the ice for the rest of the hockey season.
At the same time that was happening, I was preparing for university. Due to the fact that I had such a positive experience with Physiotherapy and its hands on, exercise-based treatment methods, I enrolled myself in the Human Kinetics program at the University of Guelph.
Over the next 4 years I worked hard, became a certified personal trainer at the university gym, played junior hockey in Guelph, and graduated with my bachelor of science degree in Human Kinetics. My first job was as a clinical kinesiologist in Trenton Ontario, which brought me to Quinte West.
In Trenton, I gained a lot of hands-on experience and was mentored by a highly skilled physiotherapist which helped me get accepted into the 3 year Doctorate of Physical Therapy program in Buffalo, New York.
Time flew by and next thing I knew it was 2012 and I had my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from D'Youville College, as well as my physiotherapy license in Florida and California.
I was fortunate to work in excellent facilities and learn from the best in Naples Florida, Pensacola Florida and Walnut Creek California before gaining enough experience and skill to open my own practice.
After coming back to Ontario and further developing my clinical and business skills in Brampton, I initiated my plan to open an evidence-based Physiotherapy practice in Trenton. Choosing Trenton as my new home was an easy choice as I had such a positive experience with the patients, the community and the outdoor lifestyle the region has to offer. In Quinte West, there is always a hockey game to be found, or someone looking to go fishing, snowmobiling, or golfing. What a great place!
